In the rapidly evolving landscape of modern warfare, the significance of a robust military doctrine and transformative capabilities cannot be overstated. The 21st century has ushered in a new era of multi-domain operations, where cyber, space, and information warfare integrate seamlessly with traditional land, sea, and air operations. Autonomous platforms, robotics and precision munitions are leading a technology driven revolution in military transformation. Socio economic changes and information outreach have impacted the way wars  are fought and how losses and destruction are perceived. In such a dynamic environment, having a well-defined doctrine is not just essential—it is imperative.

India, positioned in a geopolitically volatile region, faces unique challenges on its borders and beyond. The rise of advanced technologies like hypersonic missiles, autonomous drones, and precision-guided munitions underscores the urgency for doctrinal innovation. Transformation, however, goes beyond technology – it requires the integration of joint operations across the Army, Navy, and Air Force (we may add space, CEMA and robotics) leveraging multi-domain strategies to ensure operational cohesion. The ongoing efforts to modernise India’s armed forces, such as the induction of indigenous platforms and the promotion of Atmanirbhar Bharat, align with this need for transformation. However, these strides must be complemented by a doctrine that is agile, adaptive, and responsive to the realities of the future battlefield. A military doctrine serves as the foundation upon which a nation’s armed forces operate, strategise, and adapt. It provides clarity of purpose, aligning resources and training to meet both current and emerging threats. Without a cohesive doctrine, military efforts risk becoming fragmented, reactive, and ineffective in addressing the complexities of modern conflict. From hybrid warfare to AI-driven operations and counter-insurgency, today’s challenges demand a proactive and forward-looking approach.

As we explore the cover story of this issue, let us recognise that the doctrine is the backbone of operational success. Transformation is not an option; it is a necessity to secure our nation’s sovereignty and maintain regional stability in an unpredictable world.

This issue also features an in-depth analysis of the rapidly growing India-Japan collaboration across various domains, particularly in defence and space. This partnership holds immense potential to emerge as a formidable force both globally and within the geopolitically dynamic Indo-Pacific region, poised to witness significant strategic developments in the years ahead.
