The Paralympic Games in Paris were captivating. The athletes’ resilience and determination, overcoming immense physical challenges, showcased the true power of the human spirit in its purest form

I am not sure how many of us would have watched the Paralympic games currently on in Paris.  After having watched the grandeur and excitement of the Olympics just two weeks prior, I was a bit reluctant to spend time on watching the Paralympics. However, once I tuned in, the spirit on display was captivating – it’s at an entirely different level. The athletes’ resolve to push through adversity, to compete against all odds showcased the strength of the human spirit in its purest form.

Fortunately, broadcast well by JioCinema for its viewers in India and the region, the Games showcased an extraordinary display of human resilience and perseverance. What strikes a chord, beyond the competitive aspect, is the sheer determination and grit of athletes who, despite their physical and intellectual

challenges, refused to let their disabilities limit their capabilities. Watching these athletes compete with such heart and determination is indeed humbling and inspiring, offering profound lessons for everyone.

The scene of swimmers without limbs participating in the difficult butterfly stroke; the likes of teenaged Sheetal Devi shooting arrows clenched in her teeth and almost beating the world record; or a Sharad and Meriyappan high jumping on one leg to claim Olympic medals was especially moving. Then there is this young lady Simran Sharma, married to an Army officer, who sprinted like the wind in 100 and 200 m races and won a medal despite a severely challenged vision. Former army man, Hokato Sema hurled the shot put to clinch an Olympic bronze (see box). Looking at the participants’ grit and perseverance, how one wishes that all of them could be given a Gold Medal each just for their spirit and diligence. These games are a powerful reminder and proof (if one is needed) that true victory goes far beyond medals; it’s about showing up, giving your best, and overcoming the challenges life throws at you. These gifted beings teach us the value of persistence, gratitude, and never giving up, no matter the odds – their courage and determination provide lessons that resonate far beyond the sporting arena.

At the same time, one cannot help but admire the organisers of the Paralympic Games, as well as those who initially envisioned and brought this extraordinary event to life as they truly deserve immense recognition. Their efforts have created a platform where gifted athletes with disabilities can showcase their immense talents, proving that the human spirit knows no bounds. It is a massive service to humanity. A heartfelt salute to everyone involved for their unwavering commitment to this noble cause, for giving these athletes a platform, and for inspiring the world to believe in the power of the human spirit.
